Manuscript Submission Guidelines |
We primarily publish books about and for children or adults in natural places. Our mission is to encourage children and grown-ups to explore, enjoy, and protect the natural world and share experiences with one another through story-telling, writing, and art. We generally do not accept manuscripts that are science fiction, romance novels, mystery (unless the regional or environmental subject matter is relevant), or religious (spiritual, however, is fine). Most of our books about natural settings focus primarily on northwoods habitats. We also publish some titles that don't really fit this general description, for example our Grandma and Grandpa (and soon to be Sisters) books, guide books, how-to books, and some other upcoming titles that you will see on our website within a few months.
We would like to receive a hard copy of your entire manuscript for children's titles or several sample chapters for longer books. If we decide we are interested, we will also ask for your manuscript as a Word document on a CD or emailed to us. You may include the CD with the hard copy if you wish, but unsolicited emails may get missed. We appreciate your enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope for our reply, and if you wish the manuscript to be returned please include enough postage for that. You may mail your manuscript to:

If you have a plan for illustration, or for general book design, please tell us about it. If you are the illustrator, include a CD with some low resolution images or some color copies that are representative of the work you are suggesting for the book.
Please understand that it will be several weeks, and possibly even months, before we respond - depending on the time of year and our current work load, as well as how many manuscripts we receive. We will try to respond to every submission and to return materials, but make no guarantees. Please do not send valuable materials such as original art or your only hand-written copy of a story!
