End of the Road Reader I #16137
End of the Road Reader I  End of the Road Reader I

An anthology that includes nearly every element of northern living — bears and berries, families and fishing, history, holidays, and home repairs, gardens and golf, and even such urban imports as computers and cappuccino. 31 authors from ages eighteen to eighty-something have contributed their northwoods impressions to this book, which is a project of The Northwoods Writers' Guild.

Bob Cary, whose most recent books include "Born to Pull" and "Ely Echoes," has contributed a piece on ice fishing.

Wildlife researcher Lynn Rogers has written a factual essay on homing instincts.

There are two poems by award-winning writer and cartoonist Jane Whitledge.

A regular Boundary Waters Journal contributor, Anne Stewart has written about the 1930s girlhood of Ely guide Marie Sarkipato.

Bill Arthur, whose soothing voice is familiar to WELY listeners, has crafted a fine story of northwoods newcomers that moves from idyllic to discomfitting.

There's a humorous piece to help diagnose cabin fever and several other pieces to explain and cure it.

There's a special story for children written by a backwoods grandmother, and an essay explaining seasonal variations in moonlight.

The contrasts of life up north are vivid in many End of the Road stories — January's clenching cold and July's verdant abundance, the darkness of a loved one's death and the brightness of life well-lived, the comfort of home cooking and the stark hardships of war.

Bears are principal characters in several stories — eating berries, raiding garbage, performing for cameras, and even blessing a wedding.

A portion of the sales for each book is donated to Northern Lakes Arts Association to support the literary arts in Northeastern Minnesota.
