A Death on the Barrens #16154
A Death on the Barrens  by George Grinnell
In 1955, five men in their early twenties set off with 36-year-old Art Moffat on a canoe trip along the Dubawnt and Thelon Rivers west of Hudson Bay. The group left late, traveled slowly, and was unprepared for the cold. When a winter storm set in and they inadvertently went over a waterfall, the leader died of hypothermia. George Grinnell was one of the young men on the trip. His account, which took him 50 years to write, is largely about the group dynamics and adventures before the accident. It's a fast-paced, suspenseful read.

Photos from the trip and dramatic watercolors by Rod MacIver of Heron Dance illustrate the text.
